Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is one of the most popular and impressive ceremonial caves ever found. The ATM cave is a wet cave; you swim in the mouth of the cave and then wade through from ankle to chest water before climbing to a passageway of a dry chamber, which leads you to a cathedral-like main hall. ATM Cave is known for a crystal maiden that lies beyond a stone chamber, at which it was believed the skeleton of a teenage girl who was sacrificed was left inside the cave. After thousands of years, her remains have been covered by a layer of diamond-like limestone. The Mayas were known to sacrifice humans in the hopes of appeasing the gods and bringing fertility to the land.
